FACES Mears Park

380 Jackson St.

St. Paul

     •     Lobster Po Boy $16

     •     Chocolate Mousse Cake

FACES was a pleasant surprise. Of course, we went on a Sunday evening early so perhaps on a Saturday or Friday night it would not be so kid friendly, but at this time it was perfect. We got a seat overlooking the park and they offered our son a kiddy cocktail from the start. They do not have a kids menu, but will adjust items on their menu for kids.

I had the Lobster po boy which was great. The lobster was deep fried, which I was not expecting, but it tasted good. It was a bit spicy which I liked, but perhaps others would not. Our son had the Lobster Macaroni and Cheese without the Lobster and he loved it (and it was good - he let me sneak a bite) the next morning he asked to have the rest for breakfast, so it was clearly a winner for him. We also ordered dessert of chocolate cake which was excellent.

Overall I really enjoyed FACES will I will go back when in downtown St. Paul looking for a place to eat.

     •     Spicy Seafood Tangine $29

The Spicy Seafood (Tagine) is described as a variety of fresh-catch in cilantro, paprika, lemon, and cayenne in a tomato-cumin spicy broth. The Moroccan specialty is more than a 'hash' of seafood, it is home cooking for the head chef. A tagine is a North African earthenware pot shaped almost like a tent or crock; at Faces Mears Park the pot is brought to the table. It takes a bit of trust when ordering, but this was certainly worth it. The spices were balanced and supplemented the seafood without overpowering it. The price was a little on the high side, but the quality of ingredients and the preparation of a specialty dish such as this made the price palatable. Our son devoured the cake, but the one or two bites that I had were delicious. I do not hesitate to recommend Faces Mears Park; hopefully this Fhima restaurant won't implode any time soon.
