Rosa Mexicano

609 Hennepin Ave

Minneapolis

     •     Platanos Fried Plantains (shared) $5

     •     Baja Fish Tacos $16

Another fancy mexican restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. I will be interested to see how long it lasts, they were doing pretty well, when we were there. But there is so much really good cheap mexican food that is hard to see people coming here in the quantity needed for their space. Plus Masa is just down the street and is local restaurant and their food is just as good.

I really enjoyed my fish tacos and the plantains. They were both excellent in taste and beautiful to look at. We went with our two boys and while most mexican restaurants in the city are very kid friendly this one really isn't. It is way too expensive and many people there who do not want to see kids there, which is totally understandable. If you are paying $20 for an entree, you may not want to have see a kid eating with fingers across the way.

     •     Chicken Tortilla Pie $19.75

I like Rosa Mexicano in spite of itself. Rosa Mexicano has branched out to sixteen locations, so this is basically a chain restaurant at this stage. We visited the downtown Minneapolis location. The location, the service, and the decor are all very good. Renee had a mojito, which was tasty but not too strong. The food is good, but expensive. Renee and I had the table side guacamole over a decade ago in New York, and that was tremendous. On this visit, we settled for plantains that were okay, but nicely priced.

The chicken tortilla pie was an understated dish with subtle flavors. The menu describes it as Budin, or baked soft corn tortillas filled with Bell & Evans organic chicken, Chihuahua cheese, and poblano cream sauce. The cream sauce had a hint of salsa verde, but maybe I was imagining that. I really liked the black beans and rice served family style to the table. These were both really good. So, all in all, not a great meal, but safe. If you go, be prepared for downtown Minneapolis parking prices. I hope that Rosa Mexicano anchors this location for some time to come.
