Sabor Latino

     •     Shrimp and Rice $10.99

You know how occasionally a dish just hits the spot in a way that you can not even explain. That is what happened at Sabor Latino with the Shrimp and Rice. It really was simply a Ecuadorian version of fried rice and it was the best fried rice I have ever had. Consequently, I would like to go back and see if it was just that dish or if it was just that day and that dish and me. However, we do reviews on one visit, that is how we roll, so I thought it was fabulous and I am glad it is in our neighborhood.

When searching for the restaurant’s web site, one of the results was Citysearch. I had to laugh when I saw "You might also like... Applebee’s, Perkins." They really don’t know me very well. I appreciate that some of our readers follow us here and there, as part blog, part database, part entertainment, part critics, part lame-o’s. Sabor is a neighborhood restaurant that’s been in business a few years that I tried a while ago for lunch and was very impressed. On the night we visited, I saw a family go into the Subway a few doors down and nearly cried.

On this visit, I was less impressed, although Renee said that she had the best fried rice variation in her life. Whoa. That’s saying something. But back to me. I had the churrasco, which was fried steak and eggs (over hard this night), a heaping mound of rice, a not-so-great side salad, and some of the most flavorful grilled vegetables you’ll find. The steak was not all that great of quality, and my rice was dry and clumpy.

Overall, I was not as impressed this night as La Gran Restaurant down the street and some other places we’ve been recently. I can still recommend Sabor based on Renee’s dish and my prior lunch. I just can’t guarantee something out of this world.

Other stuff: parking on the street is ample. We parked right in front of the restaurant. The ambiance is basic table and chair seating with Univision blaring. They don’t seem to get too busy; maybe lunch is busier or at least steady.
