Victory 44

2203 44th Avenue North

Minneapolis

     •     Bacon Fries $4

     •     Devils on Horseback $7

     •     Pasta Special (corn, cream, yumminess)

     •     Bourbon bread pudding with bacon $8

I am truly sorry we have waited this long to go to Victory 44. This may be my new favorite place to go. Ok, so it may have been all the bacon in the food I ate, since as we all know bacon makes everything taste a little better, but I don't think that was it, I think there is serious talent in the kitchen.

The food was spectacular. The bacon fries, which I was most looking forward to were very good to be sure, but surprisingly not what I would order again if I went back. That honor would go to the devils on horseback, I have never had them before, clearly I have been missing out on one of life's great pleasures. Dates wrapped in bacon and deep-fried. OMG how totally amazingly tasty. The pasta special was very good a lovely light tasting intermission from all of my bacon eating. Again, the dessert was surprising to me. I have had bread pudding before, and I have never liked it. In fact, I usually avoid it, if I see it on a menu. But I ordered it since I figured I may as well sample all the bacon dishes on the menu that night since I was already 2/3 the way there. It was amazing, I was in awe, of course now, I wonder was it just their bread pudding or have I been missing out. The bacon added the just right saltiness to cut the richness of the custard and bourbon sauce, really a perfect dessert.

I will be back no question about it.

     •     Chef Tasting Menu with wine $50

     ◦     Caesar Salad

     ◦     Charcuterie

     ◦     Korean Pork BBQ

     ◦     Skirt Steak

     ◦     Cheese Course

All I can say is wow. This was probably the best restaurant of 2011 for me. Everything was offbeat and unexpected, but the chefs go over the top to bring the best food they can to the table, and the chefs literally bring the food to the table. I was very impressed with the price as well - not out of bounds for a North Minneapolis chef-driven restaurant. I would go back for the experience and whatever they put on the tasting menu. The caesar salad was straightforward -- but it included anchovies that are missing on most caesars these days. The skirt steak stands out as one that would be well worth the money on the a la carte menu. The Korean BBQ, although very very good, may be pricey in comparison. The flavors and extra preparation are all in full display, and you cannot help but revel in the experience. The charcuterie was truly up and down (some better than others), but the cheese course was right on. By the way, Renee's devils on horseback were absolutely amazing. Get yourself to Victory 44 at your earliest convenience to enjoy all of the great food at comparably reasonable prices. When you go, don't forget the bacon ice cream.
